Today’s school environment brings a slew of systemic struggles each passing year. Between academics, bullying, peer pressure, and the like, being a student is a more difficult task than ever before. Ben Sciacca discusses how to disciple the next generation to become peacemakers, with Jesus as the catalyst for the cause. He discusses practical ways to approach social justice in a school environment, whether public or private. Most importantly, the relationship between parent/teacher and child is at the forefront of the process. If we are called to be ambassadors for Christ, Sciacca challenges us to embrace living this out fully.
Ben Sciacca serves as the Executive Director at Restoration Academy (RA) in Fairfield, Alabama. RA is an urban Christ-centered school that has been providing discipleship and a quality education to under-resourced youth for almost 28 years. Ben has served there for 17 years and he passionately believes that every child should at least have access to a quality education in their neighborhood. RA is a unique place where Christ followers from various cultural, socioeconomic, and denominational backgrounds unite together for the good of the city (Jeremiah 17:9). For the last 10 years, 100% of RA’s graduates have been admitted to college. Ben received his bachelor’s degree in history from Wheaton College and his master’s in educational leadership from Covenant College. His latest book, Meals from Mars, dealing with social justice and racial reconciliation, comes out in February with NavPress. He is also the author of Kai’Ro: The Journey of an Urban Pilgrim which is an urban retelling of John Bunyan’s classic allegory, The Pilgrim’s Progress. Ben, his wife Sara, and their four children live in the neighborhood where he serves.
